Stockton University offers a dual credit course in Holocaust and Genocide Studies for high schools. This program, coordinated by Steve Marcus, has been in existence for eight years and continues to grow. Students take a course in Holocaust and Genocide Studies in their high school and, upon successful completion, receive four college credits from Stockton University. The cost is $400.00, but financial aid may be available. Students on free and reduced lunch receive a tuition waiver.

This program has been in place at Vineland High School and Holy Spirit High School since 2014 and has expanded every year to include New Jersey schools from Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Sussex Counties as well as one each in Bergen and Sussex Counties and Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. During the 2022-2023 academic year, the program will be welcoming its 35th school.

With the Dual Credit program, the course and students receive guidance and supervision from a Stockton University faculty member with specialization in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. The teacher will be mentored and afforded many professional development hours and opportunities from Stockton and the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center. The students will attend guest lectures (both in school and on the Stockton campus); engage in field trips, performances, and other related activities.

For the past several years, many schools in our Dual Credit Consortium have been participating in the Tolerance Education Program. Thirteen of our schools have received books, DVDs, and educational materials relating to the life of Esther Raab. Although temporarily ‘derailed’ by the pandemic, we are moving forward with participation and expanding the project. Materials have been distributed through the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center, which will be hosting performances of the play Dear Esther on campus.

Valuable life lessons have been put forward through the Tolerance Education Program. Such a project sparks great interest from our students and teachers alike, and we look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come.
