Each month, the Tolerance Education Program will offer a snapshot of Hate Crime in America.
A hate crime or bias-motivated crime is a crime motivated by prejudice. It occurs when a perpetrator targets a victim because of their membership (or perceived membership) of a certain social group or racial demographic. Examples of such groups can include and are almost exclusively limited to ethnicity, disability, language, nationality, physical appearance, age, religion gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Because The Tolerance Education Program aims to change the world by encouraging middle and senior high school students–world leaders of tomorrow–to make “tolerance” a cornerstone value, every month, we will add a story, graphic, or list of resources to educate and engage our readers about hate crimes in America. We hope that by sharing this information, conversations can be sparked about how tolerance can eradicate these demoralizing crimes.
